Every name analyzed on HowManyOfMe receives a demographic Rarity Tier based on estimated living bearer population thresholds in the United States. This guide explains how those tiers are structured, what data they rely upon, and how to interpret national frequency ratios.

The Five Demographic Rarity Tiers

Rather than assigning an arbitrary score, our classification system groups names into five distinct demographic frequency bands based on estimated living U.S. bearers:

How Living Bearers Are Calculated

We apply CDC actuarial cohort-survival models to official Social Security Administration birth records (1880–2024). This estimates how many individuals from each historical birth cohort are living in the United States today.

  • They reflect total national living population: A name like Linda or Mildred is Common nationwide due to older generations, even if it is rare among modern kindergartners.
  • They are not popularity rankings: A name can be #1 among newborns today (like Liam) while having far fewer total living bearers than multi-generational classics like James.
  • Unindexed names are modelled: If a name is not in top SSA records, our engine provides a clearly labelled statistical estimate without fabricating artificial exact counts.

How the Score Behaves at the Edges

The Rarity Score is most informative in the middle ranges (30–80). At the edges, it behaves in counterintuitive ways:

  • Below 10: Differences between scores 1, 5, and 10 are statistically meaningless. A name with score 1 (James, 4.7M bearers) and score 8 (Charlotte, 1.2M bearers) are both 'extremely common' in any practical sense.
  • Above 95: The score caps even though true rarity continues. A name with 50 bearers and a name with 5 bearers both score 96–100, but the second is 10x rarer. We cap to avoid implying false precision.

The score is best used as a rough category indicator, not a precise ranking. Two names with scores 65 and 72 should be considered 'similarly uncommon,' not 'distinctly different' — minor differences at the same range often reflect noise rather than real distinction.

Not all rarity scores agree, even when they use the same SSA data. The differences come from:

  3. Smoothing: Some tools smooth the curve between popularity tiers; others use sharp thresholds.

Why is my name showing a score of 99 even though it isn't that rare?

Likely a spelling issue or a name not in our database. Scores of 99 default to 'extremely rare' for names with no SSA records, but this can produce false positives for unusual spellings of common names. If you searched 'Kaytlin' but the SSA spelling is 'Caitlin,' you'll get a 99 score for an actually-common name. Try alternate spellings to find the real rarity.

How does the Rarity Score handle international names?

Why does a popular name like Liam still have a score above 0?
